Swim Classes

Swim Instruction at the Community Pool at CLU

We are pleased to offer swim classes year round! The pool is always heated to 82º-84º. 

To make sure your child is placed at the proper level, classes are divided into groups (Seals, Dolphins, Otters, etc.) based on their ability (scroll down for detailed descriptions).

Swim ability testing and class placement evaluation available upon request. Please call the Aquatics office to reserve a time.  The evaluation takes approximately five minutes.

Please Note: Completion of class does not guarantee advancement to the next level.


Reminder for parents!
  • For children under 5 years of age who are just learning to swim for the first time, a minimum of two sessions of repeated lessons is recommended.
  • Younger children under 8 years of age may need additional practice before mastering each level of swimming.  They may need more than one, or several, two-week sessions before moving to the next level.
  • We do not offer make-up lessons unless canceled by Conejo Recreation & Park District.  
  • Please alert the instructor before the first class if there are any special needs for other situations that may assist us to enhance your child's learning experience.
  • Classes are taught by American Red Cross certified and trained instructors. 


Parent/Child

This level introduces participants and their parents to the aquatics environment. Introducing skills that can help parents practice with their child through songs, toys, and games. Introduces movements on front and back, changing positions, and submerging in an up-and-down pattern.

PLEASE NOTE: This class is not designed to teach your child how to swim; parents learn skills to help guide their child to the next level of swim lessons.

Tiny Tots

Recommend participation in at least one session of Parent/Child. Introduction to water without a parent. Work on movement along the wall, blowing bubbles, breath-holding, kicking, floating, arm strokes, and underwater exploration.

PLEASE NOTE: Effective Fall 2017: All Tiny Tot Seals classes will be a maximum of two students per class. This level emphasizes water adjustment, safety, and fun.

Participants must be proficient in the following skills to take this class:

-Enter and Exit the pool using the stairs (assisted)

-Hold their breath underwater

-Floating on the back (assisted)

-Swim on front and back (assisted)

This class will be converted into a Private Instruction class if 2 people are not enrolled three business days prior to the start date.

Polliwogs

This class builds on skills from the Tiny Tots level moving into deeper water. This class works on arm and leg movements, gliding, floating. Introduces swimming without assistance.

PLEASE NOTE: This level emphasizes water adjustment, safety, and fun. Participants must be able to hang on the wall without letting go.

Participants must be proficient in the following skills to take this class:

-Enter and exit the water (unassisted)

-Shuffle along the wall without letting go (unassisted)

-Follow verbal directions

-Submerge fully underwater and blow bubbles

Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment (75% full) will be contacted with options to convert this class into a semi-private instruction, private instruction, or to move to another time slot.

Seals

Designed for children with limited experience. Children continue to work on simultaneous leg and arm movements, improve floating, and gliding on front/back.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants must be able to hang on the wall without letting go.

Participants must be proficient in the following skills to take this class:

-Submerge head under water 3 times (unassisted)

-Back glide to the instructor (unassisted)

-Front glide to the instructor (unassisted)

-Front float for 3 seconds (unassisted)

-Back float for 3 seconds (unassisted)

Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment (75% full) will be contacted with options to convert this class into a semi-private instruction, private instruction, or to move to another time slot.

Dolphins

A child at this level should be able to make forward movement. Freestyle includes arm and leg movements with rhythmic breathing (lifting their head to breath). Introduces elementary backstroke.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants in this level must have a basic knowledge of the skills below, but do not need to be mastered.

Participants must be proficient in the following skills to take this class:

-Front glide for 2 body lengths, and then roll to a back float for 3 seconds (unassisted)

-Back glide, then back float for 5 seconds (unassisted)

-Swim using arm and leg movements for 5 yards (unassisted)

-Submerge fully underwater and blow bubbles

Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment (75% full) will be contacted with options to convert this class into a semi-private instruction, private instruction, or to move to another time slot.

Otters

This level emphasizes strength, endurance, and coordination of freestyle. Introduces back & breaststroke, treading water, and diving.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants in this level must have a basic knowledge of the skills below, but do not need to be mastered. Diving is not always available at the CLU pool.

Participants must be proficient in the following skills to take this class:

-Swim freestyle for 15 yards with rotary breathing

-Elementary backstroke for 10 yards

-Swim freestyle for 5 years, back float for 5 seconds, then swim back to the wall (unassisted)

Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment (75% full) will be contacted with options to convert this class into a semi-private instruction, private instruction, or to move to another time slot.

Stingrays

This level introduces the butterfly kick and surface dives with extended instruction in the coordination of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and treading water.

PLEASE NOTE: Diving is not always available at the CLU pool.

Participants must be proficient in the following skills to take this class:

-Swim freestyle for 25 yards

-Swim backstroke for 25 yards

-Tread water for 30 seconds

-Demonstrate proper side breathing, with freestyle

-Demonstrate proper streamline

Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment (75% full) will be contacted with options to convert this class into a semi-private instruction, private instruction, or to move to another time slot.

Barracuda/Shark

This level focuses on swim endurance, stroke development, treading water, and diving. Introduces butterfly, flip turns, and circle swimming. Participants in this level will be prepared to join the swim team. *Diving not always available at CLU pool.

PLEASE NOTE: Diving is not always available at the CLU pool.

Participants must be proficient in the following skills to take this class:

-Swim freestyle with rotary breathing for 50 yards

- Swim backstroke for 50 yards

-Swim breaststroke for 25 yards

-Butterfly kick for 15 yards

- Tread water for 1 minute

-Demonstrate a standing dive into the deep water (if facility permits)

- Demonstrate a tuck and a pike surface dive (if facility permits)

Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment (75% full) will be contacted with options to convert this class into a semi-private instruction, private instruction, or to move to another time slot.

Private Instruction

One-on-one lessons designed for all ages and levels of swimming ability. Certified and experienced instructors will cater a work-out and program designed specifically to you.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants may need more than one session of instruction to reach your personal goal.

All PRIVATE INSTRUCTION classes can be converted into a semi-private class. To convert this class into a semi-private instruction, call the Aquatics office to enroll the second participant: 805-241-0894.

Semi-Private Instruction

This class will be converted into a Private Instruction class if 2 people are not enrolled three business days prior to the start date.

Swim Camp

This class offers an introductory course to a competitive swim team. Participants will learn how to swim in a team like format with an increased focus on technique, stamina, and endurance.

PLEASE NOTE: This class should only be taken if the participant successfully passed the Barracuda/Shark level. Swimmers must be able to swim 50 yards proficiently and be familiar with the front, back, breast, and butterfly strokes.

Participants should expect to learn:

-How to read a pace clock during interval sets.

-How to properly swim in a lane with a team.

-Proper stroke turns and rhythmic breathing.

-Drills and sets for increased endurance and stamina.

-A focus on the butterfly, back, breast, and freestyle strokes.

-Controlled breathing and pace oriented workouts.

Make-ups are available for this course during other times offered.

Water Polo Camp

This class offers an introductory lesson into the sport of water polo. No previous experience is necessary to join this class. Local and experienced water polo coaches from South Coast Aquatics instruct this class.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants must be able to swim 25 yards comfortably in order to take this class.

Participants should expect to learn:

-Water polo skills, rules, and drills.

-Ball handling techniques and fundamentals.

-Treading water (the egg beater).

-Competitive sportsmanship and teamwork.

-Water polo style swimming and endurance.

Adult & Teen Swim Technique

This class offers swimmers improved stroke technique, endurance, and confidence in the water. Instructed by experienced and seasoned swim instructors. Learn how to swim faster with less effort in a small group setting at your own pace.

PLEASE NOTE: This class should not be taken by swimmers that do not know how to swim or are uncomfortable in the water.

Participants should expect to learn:

-How to structure a swim workout and plan.

-Fundamentals in improved swim stroke and technique.

-How to effectively control your breathing and pace.

-Drills and swim sets tailored to individual levels.

-Introduces and fine tunes the backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly for a full body workout.

Water Walkers Workout

This class offers a conventional workout using the power of water and your body. Learn how great it feels to work hard in the water without it feeling like a workout. Low impact exercises taught by a seasoned and experienced water aerobics instructor to workout problem muscle and joint areas.

PLEASE NOTE: This class is a water aerobics class geared towards joint and muscle improvement.

Participants should expect to learn:

-How to effectively workout in the water without causing pain to joints and muscles.

-How to isolate muscle groups for an effective workout.

-How to effectively use the water to ease the pain while getting a workout.

-Drills and workouts to use on your own time.

-Introduces in water and on land low impact exercises.

Water shoes are recommended, but not required.

Swim, Bike, Run, Fun! Triathlon Camp

Introduction to the sport of Triathlons. Become a triathlete with instruction in swimming, cycling, running, and transitions between events. Camp ends with Triathlon.

Participants should expect to learn:

-How to effectively transition from swim to bike, to run.

-How to swim freestyle in an open water setting.

-How to effectively push off and exit your bike.

-How to effectively control your breathing and tempo while running.

-Introduces the standard way of organizing your transition station.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants are required to supply their own bike, suit, and running shoes. Bikes can be stored overnight on the pool deck, but bike locks are not provided. Water, snacks, and lunches are not provided. ConejoRPD is not responsible for any lost or stolen equipment.

ConejoRPD Swim Team

Take the next step into your swimming experience with our ConejoRPD Swim Team. Our novice Swim Team provides structured workouts and stroke technique in a fun and team-oriented environment. The Swim Team is a great way to experience the culture of swimming without the commitment.

PLEASE NOTE: This class should not be taken by swimmers that do not know how to swim or are uncomfortable in the water.

Participants should expect to learn:

-Effective and efficient turns, starts, and finishes for all strokes.

-Stroke technique in the Butterfly, Back, Breast, and Freestyle strokes.

-How to effectively control your breathing and pace in a workout and race.

-Drills and swim sets tailored to individual levels and endurance.

-Introduces skills to improve stamina, confidence, and distance.

Swim Workouts: Can’t make a day? No problem! Participants can attend any all the swim workouts offered during the season. Feel free to get two workouts in a day.

-TOHS Pool (TOP): 9:00-10:00am

-NPHS Pool (NPP): 4:00-5:00pm

-Monday - Thursday

-No workouts 7/2-7/5

Swim Equipment: While some equipment is provided for swim workouts, participants are required to supply some of the equipment listed below on their own. A ConejoRPD Swim Team swim cap will be provided on the first day of practice.

- Swim Suit

- Goggles

- Towel

- Sunscreen

Swim Competitions Competitions or Swim Meets are optional and are not required by participants to attend. Some Swim Meets may require registration fees. Registration fees for meets are not included in the price for the ConejoRPD Swim Team. Swim Meets dates, times, and cost are TBD and will be provided during the season.

Beginning Springboard Diving

Participants must be able to swim 25 yards and be comfortable with headfirst entries and deep water.

This class will emphasize the following skills:

-Spatial and bodily awareness, balance and flexibility

-Forward approach, Back arm press

-Forward jump, Back jump

-Forward and Back Line-ups

-Introduces forward dive tuck and forward summersault

-Participants will practice on both 1meter and 3meter diving boards

Please note: AS A SAFETY MEASURE, Dive class participants must successfully execute basic skills before moving on to more advanced skills. This may require a large amount of repetition.

Intermediate Springboard Diving

Participants must have prior dive or gymnastics experience.

This class will emphasize the following skills:

-Building on spatial and bodily awareness, balance and flexibility

-Refine Forward and Back jumps and dives

-Refine forward and back line-ups

-Build on forward/back summersaults

-Introduces inward and reverse dives/summersaults

-Participants will practice on both 1meter and 3meter diving boards

Please note: AS A SAFETY MEASURE, Dive class participants must successfully execute basic skills before moving on to more advanced skills. This may require a large amount of repetition.
