Take a look at some of the volunteer opportunities available in our community.

ADULT CARE CENTERS (Senior Concerns, Mary Health of the Sick) – Assist special needs seniors by engaging them in activities: walking, dancing, music programs, arts and crafts, games, etc.; assist as a front desk receptionist; provide clerical support and other opportunities.

AMERICAN RED CROSS—Various responsibilities. CPR and First Aid trainers (requires 22 hours of training) teach classes to the public. Continuous need for disaster responders.  Blood drive volunteers needed to register donors, help with paper work, offer snacks and refreshments.  No handling of blood or needles. A simple background check is required.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY – Office assistants & drivers. Help your neighbors by driving them to medical appointments or lend a hand in the local American Cancer Society office by answering phones and filing.  

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Ventura County–  is a volunteer-driven non profit organization that provides a powerful voice in court for children who must be removed from their homes by protective services. Trained CASA's work one on one with the children as they move through the court process.

CITY OF THOUSAND OAKS– Greet the public and provide assistance/direction to those entering City Hall. Two hour shifts are available for friendly volunteers.

CONEJO FREE CLINIC—Receptionists, data entry assistants and healthcare professionals to work with the uninsured and the homeless. Flexible hours Monday—Friday.

CONEJO PLAYERS THEATRE – Provides low cost theatre to our local community and also provides an opportunity for local people to participate in live theatre.  Needed: ushers, costuming, set construction and mailing preparation. 

CONEJO VALLEY ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM – Volunteers needed to tutor adults in reading, writing and spelling at the Conejo Valley Adult School Literacy Center.  Volunteers and students are matched and meet weekly.  Training workshops are held 2—3 times per year.

 CONEJO VALLEY BOTANIC GARDENS – Variety of tasks. Would you like to plant, prune,  learn to propagate plants or conduct tours for school children or adults?  Our local botanic garden, located at Conejo Community Park, is maintained and managed by volunteers who set their own schedules.

CONEJO VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT— Make a difference in the life of a child. If you have an hour or two a week to spend in the classroom to help children (under the direction of the teacher), you can give an extra boost to a child’s learning experience.

CONEJO YOUTH EMPLOYMENT SERVICES (CYES) – Assist youth in their search for employment, answer phones, help teens prepare for job interviews, receptionist duties and more.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS (DART AND CERT) – Train to become part of a team to assist local government and public safety agencies (DART) or your family and neighbors (CERT) in the event of a local emergency.

DISCOVERY CENTER –  A place to experience science and foster curiosity, volunteers bring science experiments to classrooms, work in the Star lab, and/or assist with Family Science Nights.

GARDENS OF THE WORLD— Docents. Rewarding volunteer opportunities in a beautiful garden setting. Docents are trained to lead educational tours. Volunteers are scheduled from 10:00—1:00 or from 1:00– 4:00 Tuesday through Sunday.

HOSPICE OF THE CONEJO –  Hospice volunteers are special people.  Each has a unique ability to be of help.  Some work directly with terminally ill patients and their families to provide emotional support, companionship and respite care.  Other volunteers help with office work, mailings and fundraising. 

LONG TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN – As advocates for the frail elderly, these volunteers visit, observe, advise, protect and help solve problems in every long term care facility in Ventura county. Increasing numbers of facilities for the frail elderly call for more guardians and protectors. Excellent training is provided.

MANNA – Volunteers work at the food bank collecting and distributing food to needy families. 

MANY MANSIONS – Many Mansions is a non-profit, affordable housing provider with on-site services to help residents break the cycle of poverty. Various opportunities including: Homework/Literacy Program; Food Share; fundraising; event planning and more!

MEALS ON WHEELS and BROWN BAG – Drivers and meal preparers. Prepare and pack lunches for delivery to Meals on Wheels clients or deliver meals.  Help older adults who are unable to drive or cook for themselves. 

MEDICAL CENTERS (Los Robles, East Campus Rehab) – Interest, compassion and caring are the attributes you need to volunteer at the local hospital.  Meet people, learn new skills, help your community!  Immediate needs are in patient care areas, patient companions and deliveries. 

 NATIONAL PARK SERVICE –  Education volunteers teach children who are visiting the parks.  Volunteers are also needed to assist in the Visitors Center.

RIDE-ON THERAPEUTICS—Dedicated to improving the lives of disabled children and adults through instruction and guidance in the field of therapeutic horseback riding.  Volunteers work with horses and riders, ranch maintenance, or office work. 

SEASONS— Senior Experts and Speakers on Numerous Subjects (SEASONS) is a unique inter-generational partnership which brings senior volunteers into local classrooms to speak on career experiences, hobbies, personal history, travel, art and music, social science, astronomy and self-esteem.  Do you have knowledge to share? 

SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM— Assist in the dining room at the Goebel Senior Adult Center—make new friends as you take lunch reservations and assist with dining room preparation.

SHOP AHOY—Provide weekly shopping and delivery service for the elderly and/or disabled homebound local residents.  Take telephone orders, shop at Vons on Moorpark Road at 9:00 am each Thursday, or take orders to the customer. 

STAGECOACH INN MUSEUM—Volunteers are involved with all aspects of museum’s operation including governance.  They lead tours, work in the gift shop and garden, help with conservation, register artifacts and do repairs and fabrication.

TAX PREPARERS– Volunteers attend training sessions at the Goebel Senior Adult Center during the month of January to become an IRS authorized tax assistant. Volunteers then prepare taxes for low-income and senior residents of Thousand Oaks during the months of February—April. Must be comfortable using a computer.

THOUSAND OAKS LIBRARY (Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park Branches) – Do you like books?  Provide data entry on a PC, organize books or assist shoppers at the gift store which benefits the programs and services of the library. 

THRIFT SHOPS—Several local thrift shops can use your help sorting, pricing or assisting as a cashier.  Thrift shops raise funds for local nonprofit organizations.

VOLUNTEERS IN POLICING (VIP)—Volunteers are needed to staff Resource Centers. Volunteers provide the public with helpful information, pamphlets, applications for vacation house checks, extra patrol requests and fingerprinting services.

WELLNESS COMMUNITY – The Wellness Community offers free programs which provide psychological, social and emotional support for cancer patients and their families. Volunteer for clerical and receptionist tasks at their office in Westlake.

WESTMINSTER FREE CLINIC – Health care professionals. This is a non-profit organization which provides basic health care to uninsured homeless and working poor people of East Ventura County.  Physicians, especially family practice or specialists in internal medicine, nurses, dentists and other health care professionals are needed on Wednesday evenings.
